Scharner targets valuable midfield role with West Brom

Paul Scharner is determined to make a success of his midfield role with West Bromwich Albion. The Austrian became accustomed to operating at the heart of the back four during his time at Wigan, but hopes to have left those days behind.

The 30-year-old, who moved to The Hawthorns as a free agent this summer, is also looking forward to turning out for a side whose football philosophies match his own.

"It's an absolute pleasure to sign for West Brom. There is a lot of potential and I'm sure we can stay in the league," Scharner told the club's official website.

"The style of play here is beautiful and what I was looking for was to get into a team that plays football. That's what I've missed over the last couple of years.

"Now it's up to me because I'm signed as a midfielder and this is my best position. I'm looking forward to it.

"I've signed as a central midfielder and that is why I joined West Bromwich because I want to take the chance to show everyone this is the right position for me."

Scharner is also looking to help West Brom consolidate their Premier League standing.

"I remember West Brom is called a yo-yo team - up and down between the Premier League and the Championship," he added.

"My first target is to help establish West Brom in the Premier League and stay there for a long time.

"The main target for Wigan was to stay in the Premier League and establish ourselves in the Premier League.

"We did a good job in the past but now I have a new target at a new club."
