Sampdoria boss Ranieri proud of players after derby defeat of Genoa

Sampdoria boss Claudio Ranieri was proud of his players after their derby defeat of Genoa.

Substitute Manolo Gabbiadini came off the bench to snatch a winner at the 85th minute.

“It was a very difficult match played by both teams with the dagger between their teeth," the coach told DAZN.

“It was hard to find a way through, but we managed it and I told the lads it'd be decided by the tiniest thing, a lost ball, but fortunately the goal also came at the right time."

Ranieri has now played and won all four major Italian city derbies in Rome, Milan, Turin and Genoa.

“Winning the derby is always important, quite apart from the position in the table. Juventus are coming up on Wednesday, but we'll think about that then.

“It was crucial to play with heart and soul, which we did, and our fans were magnificent. We have to continue this work, this determined and aware also that we're not out of the quicksand yet. We have three points, we won the derby, but must already think of the next test.

“The only reason I continue this profession is to feel these emotions, which are indescribable. Winning against the run of play when you think it might no longer be coming, that's priceless."
