Former Sydney FC captain Mark Rudan says he has taken no joy from keeping up with his old clubs results this season. Rudan plays with Avispa Fukuoka in Japan's J-League but tries to keep track of the Sky Blues.

This season he has had no joy when tracking results but believes the proud club needs to be patient and work through this rough patch.

"I've been following the A-League every week through the internet and watching highlights and it's disappointing to see what's happening," Rudan told The World Game.

"Sydney are close to my heart and I've had a great time playing there so I want every success for the club.

"I don't really know what's wrong. All I can say is that Sydney is a different club to play for because the pressure from the fans and media is greater. Sydney have to win every week and put on a show too.

"Some players can adapt to that sort of pressure and some others can't. But that's life in such a big city as Sydney.

"It's not like playing for Newcastle or Central Coast. Sydney FC is a big club that demands a lot from its players, a club where nothing but the best is enough.

"You speak to any player in the league and they would tell you that they look forward to the Sydney game because they want to beat Sydney, even if they are bottom of the league. So the boys have to know that and step up every week.

"It's easy to point the finger at coach John Kosmina and say that he is the problem but that's an excuse that I've never taken very well. It has to come from yourself as a player, I mean you have to make sure that you are playing well.

Rudan also touched on the fact that with the A-League consisting of just eight teams at the moment, you are never too far away from the pacesetters.

"There's no need to panic," he added. "The quality of players is still there and if you look at the table you'll see that they are only two wins from the top positions. The A-League is that sort of league where two wins on the trot would take you places.

"And the good thing about Sydney is that they've got the best youth team in the country so that says a lot about the club's recruitment drive even at junior level.

Rudan concluded by saying that being able to play with the same players each week was a major factor for individual performances.

"The club has bought good quality players again, the best players that were available on the market," he said.

"I just think that the main problem for Kossie is that he has not been able to select the same 11 week in week out.

"Stability in a team is important. Defenders would not want to be playing with three different defenders all the time, same with the forwards."
