Danny Rose admits Tottenham teammate Brad Friedel convinced him about a loan move to Sunderland.

Friedel played for Sunderland boss Martin O'Neill at Aston Villa.

Rose told safc.com: "Brad played under Martin O'Neill for years at Aston Villa and had lots of positive things to say about him.

"I'm looking forward to him helping me develop as a player and me hopefully getting a run of games."

He added: "I know a few people at Villa as well - when I heard of the interest from Sunderland I texted a few people and they said nothing but positive things.

"I'm still relatively young and there's not many better managers to learn my trade from."
