Rooney: Penning new Man Utd deal best decision I have made

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney admits staying and signing a new deal last season was his best career decision.

The Reds striker has started the season with five goals in three games and is looking forward to continuing his good form with England in the upcoming Euro 2012 qualifiers against Bulgaria and Wales. After making the most of a rare summer break, Rooney is delighted to be fully fit and in peak form.

"I'm thankful I stayed and signed," he told PA Sport. "I said at the time, after I signed my contract, that I had made a mistake. I owed performances and goals to the fans for what happened.

"For me, it's the best decision I've made in my football career. I am enjoying it and I am in a happy place both on and off the pitch. I am looking forward to every game that comes. I feel good. I think there have been times when I have been more aggressive on the pitch and gone in for silly challenges but I'm not really doing that any more and I'm feeling more relaxed on the pitch. Sometimes it happens and it's hard to control but, if you stay more controlled, your performances will certainly be better.

"I feel strong and fit. We're playing well and enjoying it as a team. I'm extremely confident in what we do now and I believe I can help us be successful with the players around me. There is a lot of movement and energy, that helps you get in more space and influence the game more. That is what I seem to be doing."
