Roman Shirokov: Bournemouth chose to sign Juan Iturbe over me

Former Russia international Roman Shirokov has revealed he came close to joining Bournemouth during his career.

Now 38, Shirkov says it was a straight choice between himself and Argentine midfielder Juan Iturbe.

He recalled: "A proposal from abroad was just the one.

"At the end of 2015 - the beginning of 2016, I was invited to switch to Bournemouth.

"But they chose between me and the Roma footballer, I don't remember his last name (Iturbe). They gave him 15 million, and in the end he didn't play for them.

"Naturally, I wanted to go, and the money was not important, because I knew that in England it doesn't matter how old you are. You can join any team, intermediate or below average, and if you show yourself, you will always be invited to a higher level."
