Roma legend Aldair: Why I gave Totti captaincy

Roma legend Aldair has explained handing the captaincy to Francesco Totti.

Aldair was with Roma between 1990 to 2003.

“There was a vote among the players to decide who would become captain after the previous holder left. There were a few options, but the majority elected me captain," Aldair told ESPN Brasil.

“I thought about what it would mean for Francesco Totti and the city for him to be captain. He was a lifelong fan and one of the most talented players. I thought it would be important for him to be the captain of this team and I handed over the armband.

“I hoped he would become what he was born to be. I made the right choice. Francesco is a man of few words, and so was I, as we only spoke up when we needed to in the dressing room.

“I watched him grow up and knew he'd become what he eventually did. There are few players in the world of football like him, to have played only and forever for one club."
