Roma coach Spalletti: Aquilani's Liverpool move had to be done

Roma coach Luciano Spalletti says fans must accept the decision to sell Alberto Aquilani to Liverpool.

"We must accept a couple of sales," explained Spalletti in his Press conference. "We'll go on to forge that group of players you need to have a season at the top level."

There was a marked difference in the wording of the two statements, though, as Liverpool announced they had agreed a deal, while Roma were more vague.

"AS Roma announce they have authorised Liverpool to make contact with Alberto Aquilani, to discuss the possibility of his transfer to England."

The fact this move is pending a medical could be behind the reticence, as Aquilani has barely played in six months and recently underwent ankle surgery.

"What makes the difference must be our way of working and seeking the right path together," added Spalletti. "We have many players, but will try to replace those who are leaving us."
