Arsenal had a deal in place for Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez ahead of the January market, it has been revealed.
El Confidencial says Saul's agent, Jorge Mendes, had struck terms with the Gunners and he was on his way to London next month.
However, Atletico pulled the plug on the deal after Tiago's leg break suffered last month.
Arsenal had planned to sign Saul as cover for the injured Francis Coquelin.
The transfer is now on the backburner and Arsenal may've missed their chance, with Saul enjoying an outstanding run of form in recent weeks.
Atletico coach Diego Simeone has spoken openly of his admiration for Saul and was key to him extending his deal to 2020 earlier this year.
