Republic of Ireland caretaker coach O'Shea: Kelleher or Bazunu

Republic of Ireland caretaker coach John O'Shea has refused to state who will be his first-choice goalkeeper.

With friendlies coming up this month, O'Shea faces a choice between Liverpool keeper Caoimhín Kelleher or Southampton's Gavin Bazunu.

He said, “It'll be a good goalkeeper – very good. But, look, that's obviously what we want, we want the goalkeepers playing at a level that's going to be testing themselves.

“Obviously Caoimhín has stood out over the last couple of weeks – the level that he's been playing at and the demands being put on him. I think Gavin has been showing amazing consistency in a Southampton team that in general has been doing very, very well.

“And I'm thinking of Max O'Leary and Mark Travers. Obviously, Mark was playing at the start of the season and went back to Bournemouth (from Stoke City), but Max is having a good season at Bristol City as well, so it's a good goalkeeping unit.

“I haven't been speaking to anyone because I wanted to get the press conference out of the way, but of course I'll be speaking to Séamus (Coleman) with the experience as well as the young blood, which will be very important for these two games."
