Relegation will cost Stoke £40M

Stoke City could lose £40 million if they're relegated.

The Sentinel says top-flight clubs are widely expected to net a figure of at least £60m apiece next season thanks to the new £3bn TV deal between 2013 and 2016.

Relegated clubs heading for the Championship, meanwhile, are currently being offered a figure of around £23m in a parachute payment for next season.

That's a difference of £37m for starters, but when other income streams such as merchandising, ticket sales and matchday hospitality are added, the figure swells to around the £40m mark.

Stoke's wage bill last season was around £53m.
