Reigning champions Guangzhou Evergrande hit five against Cerezo Osaka

Asian Champions League holders Guangzhou Evergrande have flexed their muscle by hammering Cerezo Osaka 5-1 in the Round of 16 first leg.

Marcello Lippi's men destroyed Ranko Popovic's side at the Nagai Stadium in Osaka to place one foot in the quarter-finals as they go about defending their continental title.

Braces from Brazilian pair Muriqui and Elkeson did the damage for Evergrande who have now won six matches in a row in all competitions.

Pohang Steelers edged K-League rivals Jeonbuk Motors 2-1 in Jeonju thanks to late goals from Son Joo-ho and Go Moo-yul after Lee Jae-sung had opened the scoring for the home side.

Asamoah Gyan netted his eighth goal of the ACL campaign as Al-Ain beat UAE rivals Al-Jazira 2-1 in Abu Dhabi while Saudi Arabia's Al-Ittihad got the better of their domestic adversaries Al-Shabab 1-0 in Mecca.

The second lot of Round of 16 fixtures takes place on Wednesday with A-League runners-up Western Sydney Wanderers set to take on Sanfrecce Hiroshima in Japan, South Korea's FC Seoul heading to Japan's Kawasaki Frontale, Uzbekistan's Bunyodkor hosting Saudi Arabia's Al-Hilal and Qatar side Al-Sadd up against Iran's Foolad.

The return legs of the 2014 Asian Champions League's Round of 16 take place on Tuesday, May 13 and Wednesday, May 14.
