Former Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp expects Rafa Benitez to remain at Newcastle United next season.

Benitez has a breakout clause in his contract which can be activated by both the Magpies and the Spaniard himself in the event of relegation.

Yet Redknapp insists he'd be “surprised" if Benitez opted to leave St James ' Park.

“With Rafa I think he'd stay - I'd be surprised if he left," the 69-year-old told TalkSport.

“Newcastle is a special club.

"I know their results don't tell you that, but when you get 50,000 people every week – it's an incredible stadium.

“I'm sure he'd stay on and would want to bring them back up next year.

"They would be a powerhouse in the Championship."
