Redknapp models Portsmouth on Arsenal

Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp has revealed he has learned from Arsene Wenger as he bids to bring European football to Fratton Park.

Pompey's home form has always been vital to retaining their Premier League status as they have seemed to struggle on the road.

But Redknapp admits he has followed Arsenal's lead and installed strength and power into his side, signing the likes of Papa Bouba Diop and Sylvain Distin.

Redknapp told the News of the World: "When we played Arsenal last year I saw how Arsene had people like Emmanuel Eboue and Abou Diaby, big strong players with strength and running power, and I thought 'Yes, we need that'.

"You do need strength in the Premier League to avoid being brushed aside.

"But I also wanted people who can play and handle the ball. I wanted a bit of presence in midfield, a bit of depth.

"The result is we do have a team full of athletes - one that is powerful and able to have a real go and one that won't be brushed aside away from home."

He added: "There has been a big change around and when I made 10 changes for the Carling Cup win at Burnley, most of those players would almost certainly have been in my side last year. People like Pedro Mendes and Matty Taylor are not in at the moment.

"OK, one or two will want to go in January because they are not happy and sick of reserve team football and I can understand that.

"But, at the same time, I will be looking for a striker then. I tried for Fredi Kanoute and Nicolas Anelka in the summer and I want a fourth one here to join Kanu, Benjani and David Nugent.

"Competition is what I am looking for."

Redknapp added that his goal is to bring European football to Fratton Park.

"I made the Uefa Cup when I was at West Ham and it would be nice to get there again. People forget where we were just 18 months ago but you never know," he said.
