Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp was delighted with his summer market work.
"Everybody knows Gary O'Neil did a great job here, he never let us down but he's gone to Middlesbrough and seemed to fancy the idea.
"I looked all over for new players - especially good English ones but at the prices being quoted I couldn't find a real bargain.
"There are a lot of African players coming into the English game now and we've got our share with Kanu, Sulley Muntari, Benjani, Lauren and John Utaka.
"They are terrific players, great athletes.
"But I would have loved to sign more English players as well - but what can you do?"
