Redknapp believes Man Utd striker Rooney suffering confidence crisis

Former Liverpool and Tottenham midfielder Jamie Redknapp says Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney is suffering a confidence crisis.

Rooney has failed to deliver for England at the World Cup.

But despite his problems, Redknapp has faith Rooney can come good and fire England into the quarter finals.

"We need to build him up again," Redknapp told Sky Sports.

"He hasn't performed yet and we need him to - he is our star player.

"When he plays for Manchester United he is exceptional, he gets hold of the ball and brings people into play but he has struggled.

"It has been difficult for him and he seems to have lost his way a little bit."

Redknapp believes the pressure of expectation, and continued fitness problems from an ankle injury Rooney picked up in the Champions League clash with Bayern Munich, could be the reason for his disappointing displays.

"It is very difficult to put your finger on it because last season he was immense in everything he did," he said.

"He was scoring so many goals and every time the ball came to him it looked like something was going to happen.

"It's a little bit of a lack of confidence at the moment, but it will come.

"When he was coming off against Slovenia he looked like he may have had a slight knock and it is difficult to find your rhythm when you have that.

"Perhaps after training, when you want to do a bit of extra finishing with the other forwards, you can't do it because you have to look after your injuries and make sure you are in the best shape possible.

"The ankle injury he picked up against Bayern Munich really did take everything that's so good about him out of his game, and he has really struggled to find his rhythm since. Hopefully it will come."
