Real Madrid midfielder Modric: Liverpool heads dropped after first goal

Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric admits they weren't pushed by Liverpool for their Champions League win.

Despite a promising start at Anfield, Brendan Rodgers' side fell victim to the brilliance of Cristiano Ronaldo and were 1-0 down within 23 minutes.

A brace from Karim Benzema then effectively put an end to the game before half-time, and with El Clasico to consider this weekend, Modric has admitted his team were able to lower their performance level in the second half.

"In the last month, or month and a half, we have looked in great shape and we showed our top form in this iconic stadium," Modric said.

"The first goal broke them. They lost enthusiasm.

"Then in the second half we were saving a little bit of energy for Saturday.

"The atmosphere in the team is great and it's one of the reasons why we're playing so well.

"I am ready for the Clasico, whatever the outcome is.

"Hopefully, we will win because it would mean a lot for our confidence."
