Real Madrid legend Hierro on World Cup flop: I have a very calm conscience

Real Madrid legend Fernando Hierro has spoken of his difficult time in charge of Spain last year.

Spain flopped at the World Cup as Hierro stepped in for Julen Lopetegui after his sacking on the eve of the tournament.

Hierro told Marca: "That's life. These are circumstances that happen to us. I have a very calm conscience. I did what I had to do at the time. There's no need to think about the matter anymore. I know why I did it and therefore I can be at peace. If I were to go back, I would do the same. My country needed me and I couldn't say no.

"Things come at you in a certain way and you have to confront them. I can't look backwards because I have a very calm conscience. It's the best thing that can happen."

Of his future, Hierro added: "I'm not in any rush. I'm relaxed, enjoying the moment, enjoying life and living all the situations that I come across day by day. Things will happen and decisions will have to be made, but I'm relaxed for now. When something really calls out to me, that will be when I think about the next step."
