Real Madrid insiders insist president Florentino Perez is serious about moving for Manchester United star Wayne Rooney.

Perez's resolve has strengthened following the club's exit from the Champions League at the hands of Lyon last month - a monumental disaster as the final this year is held at Real's Bernabeu Stadium.

Top Madrid sources have told The Sun: "Florentino loves English players, they are the embodiment of fighting spirit and always have a great work ethic and attitude.

"Beckham and Owen were headline signings and Perez always appreciated their conduct, quite apart from the money they generated, particularly Beckham. It's the same with Rooney, who's also a global icon."

Perez also signed Jonathan Woodgate in his previous reign from Newcastle United.
