The Royals deserved their win as they were the better team but needed the help of keeper Adam Federici with a couple of smart stops from Kevin McDonald and David Edgar to keep them in the game.
The winning strike arrived three minutes from time when Gylfi Sigurdsson met Andy Griffin's cross to seal another notable cup win.
