Defending Scottish Premier League champions Rangers have placed more pressure on title rivals Celtic by edging back to the top of the table. The Hoops have held pole position for a number of weeks now but have now surrendered their stranglehold on the league by dropping to second as 'Gers moved back to number one with a 2-0 away win over St Johnstone last night.
Kyle Lafferty opened the scoring in the 20th minute when he pounced on a defensive error from Saints left-back Daniel Grainger, who had put in a short headed backpass toward keeper Peter Enckelman. Lafferty picked up the crumbs, rounded Enckelman and slotted home to make it 1-0.
Walter Smith's men were well on top in terms of possession and general attempts on goal and it proved that way when the visitors grabbed a second with seven minutes remaining through Steve Naismith who followed up his goal in the 3-2 loss to Dundee United on Saturday.
A flick-on from the in-form Nikica Jelavic found Naismith who managed to take a low shot past Enckelman, wrapping up proceedings, and putting his side back on top of the table.
Rangers next take on Hamilton Academical this Sunday as Celtic prepare for a cluttered schedule of four games in eight days, beginning with tonight's meeting with Hibernian at Celtic Park as the title race heats up.
