QPR have stripped Joey Barton of the club captaincy and fined him six weeks’ wages for his misdemeanours on the final day of last season.

The 29-year old midfielder copped a 12-match ban and was fined £75,000 for elbowing Carlos Tevez, kneeing Sergio Aguero and trying to headbutt Vincent Kompany when the R’s lost to champions Manchester City in mid-May and has now been punished further by his club.

"QPR FC can confirm Joey Barton has been fined six weeks' wages and will no longer be club captain,” read a club statement.

"If Barton seriously breaches the club's disciplinary procedures again, the club reserves the right to terminate his contract."

Barton added on the club’s official website: "My behaviour was wrong and I accept the punishment that has been imposed upon me as a result.

"I apologise to the manager, my team-mates and of course the QPR fans for my actions.

"I also apologise to the Manchester City players, staff and supporters.
