Pulis: 90% of Stoke fans were against my appointment

Stoke City boss Tony Pulis admits there was plenty of push back from fans when he first returned to the Brit.

He freely admits 90 per cent of the club's fans were against his appointment nearly five years ago.

Peter Coates, previously hounded out by disgruntled supporters, had just returned as chairman, after buying out the club's Icelandic owners, and quickly decided to approach Plymouth for Pulis.

Reminded that his chairman once said he seemed nervous about taking the reins for a second time, Pulis smiled ruefully, and said: "The truth is I was nervous for him, because I wasn't exactly everyone's first choice for the job. In fact, it was probably 90 per cent (against the appointment).

"But you are always going to get criticism as a manager, even if you are winning things. Even Sir Alex Ferguson was getting slaughtered a few years ago, and you just have to accept it. If you are expecting a bed of roses and a pat on the back every week, you are in the wrong job.

"You are always going to be criticised, because everyone can do it better than you. It's the same with the chairman. When you think of what he and his family went through previously, especially coming from Stoke and living in the area, it tells you everything about him that he felt he had unfinished business and wanted another go.

"I hope the supporters appreciate me now. I'm pretty sure 95 per cent are now convinced we are doing it the right way and that Peter made the right choice."
