Premier League signs Chinese broadcasting deal

The Premier League has confirmed another international broadcast contract, this time in China and Macau, reports SportsPro. Super Sports Media Group, which has held the Chinese and Macau rights to the league for the past two seasons, has signed a deal for all 380 games per season from 2013/14 to 2018/19.

No financial details were immediately available but the past two rights cycles have seen the Chinese market generate some US$50 million each for the Premier League. Early indications suggest this deal is a significant increase on that figure.

Super Sport Media Group took over from pay service Win TV and has sold some matches on to regional Chinese broadcasters.

The Premier League is selling three year packages in most countries but has opted for a longer-term deal in one of the world's biggest markets.

"The main reason for agreeing a six-year partnership with Super Sports is our recognition of their innovative and successful business model and that their coverage and reach makes our matches available to fans in all provinces across mainland China and Macau," said chief executive Richard Scudamore.

Jianguang Li, a board member of Super Sports Media Group, added: "The Premier League has developed a profound understanding of the sports broadcasting market in China and we are very pleased to have formed this long-term partnership with them."

Li added: "This agreement demonstrates the Premier League's strong commitment towards China and Chinese football fans. It will further increase the Premier League's profile in China and give them the opportunity to make it one of their fastest growing markets."
