Porto boss Villas-Boas always fancied breaking Chelsea Champions League hoodoo

Porto coach Andre Villas-Boas has always harboured an ambition of returning to Chelsea.

It is believed he is concerned this opportunity might not arrive again were he to turn it down and, with what he has said in the past, he clearly has designs in working for Chelsea - only he did not expect it to be now.

"London is a city where I could live perfectly," Villas-Boas said. "We had some good times over there and the people in the club are fantastic, from the players, staff and the owner.

"With Jose, we reached maximum success. Chelsea won the Premier League title, 50 years after they last won it. It was something very, very strong and made a big impact on world football.

"Maybe it established the name of Chelsea as a really successful club in the world?" Now he will be given the chance to take Chelsea to the very top by winning the Champions League - the trophy the club have never won.

Villas-Boas said: "I can understand that Chelsea are obsessed by the Champions League, that is legitimate.

"But Champions Leagues are not won by the best clubs, they are won by the clubs who are lucky, particularly with the home and away draws in the knockout stages.

"You can build a top team to be successful in the Champions League but you also have to be efficient over the two games - and in those two games you can be lucky or unlucky."
