Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino has been explaining the reasons for introducing a three-man defence.
The Argentina coach has settled on a 3-4-2-1 in recent weeks.
"I think that the answer is to have a Plan B and Plan C in different games," Pochettino told Tottenham's official Facebook page.
"It's important that he squad can surprise the opponent - sometimes you need to be flexible.
"The players need to know that we can play differently. Football is a game that you need to be flexible in and adapt your characteristics.
"It's important for our squad profile we can cope with different systems," he added.
