Pieters slams Stoke: ‘If you play like this, you might as well stay home’

Erik Pieters was harsh in his analysis of Stoke City's performance against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

The Potters were easily brushed aside by Spurs at White Hart Lane, conceding all four goals in the first half as they were beaten 4-0 in North London.

"If you play like this in the Premier League then you may as well stay at home," the Dutch defender said to stokecityfc.com.

"I think we must forget about this game really, really quickly and focus on next weekend because it simply wasn't good enough and we need to rectify this result very quickly.

"Of course we have to have a really good look at it straight away and have a very hard look in the mirror at ourselves to make sure it doesn't happen again.

"When it was 1-0 we had a couple of chances, Crouch saw a chance brilliantly saved and we had a couple of counter opportunities as well, but if you don't take them – especially away against a side like Spurs - then you're going to have a hard afternoon.

"The game was beyond us at half time, which allowed them to go easier in the second half. We can try and take a positive from that, but it's only because Spurs took their foot of the gas."

Harry Kane scored a hat-trick and provided an assist for Dele Alli as Spurs returned to second position on the Premier League table with Stoke falling to 10th with a second away defeat on the trot.
