Petrov calls for winter signings at Villa

Aston Villa captain Stiliyan Petrov has implored the club to add to their squad during January.

Villa sit 10th on the table but were toothless in attack in the 2-0 home loss to Liverpool on Sunday without attackers Darren Bent and Gabriel Agbonlahor and Petrov hopes manager Alex McLeish is given cash to inject some strength into the playing group in the winter window.

"Of course. In the Premier League you cannot afford not to add players during the transfer windows," the Bulgarian told Express & Star.

"I'm sure Alex will be given the money to strengthen the squad and I hope he can get it because he deserves it. He has been working really hard and it will be nice to see a couple of new faces.

"We missed Gabby Agbonlahor and Darren Bent against Liverpool. We know how important Gabby is for us. He gives us something different when he plays.

"If you look at the bench, and there are a lot of young boys. It's hard for the young boys but they want to learn and it will take a while and the club is taking big faith in these young players.

"Maybe the fans need to be a little bit patient with them because a young player needs time to build up, especially in the Premier League."
