Petr Cech deal: Why it offers no hope for change in Arsenal transfer policy

COMMENT: Petr Cech and Arsenal. So Gooners, are you convinced? With his big name raid on Chelsea, has Arsene Wenger shown that he is prepared to shop at the top shelf?

After all, he did nick Alexis Sanchez away from Liverpool 12 months ago - and the year before that, should have landed Luis Suarez.

But what about now? With Cech between the posts, can Arsenal fans expect that experienced, ball-winning midfielder they've been screaming out for to soon be added by Wenger? And what about a consistent goalscorer, able to bounce off the work of Olivier Giroud? Are these deals just around the corner?

Well, don't hold your breath, Gooners. Let's face it, the Cech deal fell into Wenger's lap. No wonder he's been grinning from ear to ear this week!

There was no competition. Cech had made it clear, he wanted to stay in the Premier League - and in London. Arsenal were the only show in town. Tottenham couldn't offer Cech Champions League football. Wenger didn't have to lift a finger. This was a transfer driven by Cech and his agent, Viktor Kolar.

And at £11 million, Arsenal didn't even have to haggle.

Eleven million quid? Manchester United are refusing to sell David de Gea to Real Madrid for less than £30 million. And Stoke City have told Chelsea £8 million plus Victor Moses for Asmir Begovic won't be enough. The Bosnian is a fine keeper, but not in Cech's class at this stage in his career. Yet, Chelsea are basically coughing up what they collected from Arsenal to find cover for Thibaut Courtois.

This was a transfer completely manufactured on Chelsea's side. From Roman Abramovich, to Cech and Kolar. They did all the running. The only thing Wenger had to do was welcome Cech at the Emirates front gate.

There's no question it's a brilliant deal. As Gunners legend David Seaman stated, Cech is "part of the jigsaw that's nearly finished".

But this jigsaw is taking a helluva long time to finish. And on the evidence of how Cech's transfer was put together, there's no sign of Wenger suddenly changing his penny pinching ways.

After all, just as Cech was putting pen to paper on his Arsenal deal, Jackson Martinez was announcing he was to join Atletico Madrid.

Before the Copa America, the Porto striker had revealed contact with Arsenal - as had his agent and Porto officials. But a month on, his transfer became a shootout between Atletico and AC Milan. Arsenal were nowhere to be seen.

That Atletico clinched a deal for a fee rising (including bonuses) to Martinez's €35 million buyout clause does suggest they didn't get a clear run at the Colombian. But in the end they outbid all rivals. Would it be any surprise that Arsenal cried off just as the auction was ramping up?

In Chile, they're convinced Arturo Vidal will be leaving Juventus this month for the Gunners. But this week, Real Madrid were linked with the midfielder by the well-connected Madrid press. Vidal is the player to transform Arsenal's midfield. But like Martinez, Wenger appears happy to let him slip through the net.

Geoffrey Kondogbia, now with Inter Milan, is another who would have improved Arsenal's midfield with his presence. Instead, Inter have been celebrating their swoop for the ex-Monaco man for the past week. Massimo Moratti, the former Inter president, rates the deal the best the club has done since his signing of Ronaldo from Barcelona.

And that's not to mention Carlos Bacca and AC Milan.

The Cech deal is a great coup. But drill down and you see that all the running was made on Chelsea's side. There's still no sign of Wenger changing his ways.

That jigsaw will still be missing pieces when the transfer window slams shut in September.
