Peterborough United boss Darren Ferguson is back at the top of the manager shortlist at QPR.
The Sun says former Manchester United midfielder Ferguson was overlooked in favour of Paulo Sousa after Rangers sacked Iain Dowie in October.
But Portuguese boss Sousa is close to the axe himself having managed just five wins in 22 games.
Ferguson will have Bristol City chief Gary Johnson as a rival for the Loftus Road hotseat.
A source revealed: "Ferguson has twice been overlooked for more experienced men.
"This time around he is a real contender - but Johnson is another the board like."
