Perth Glory's Burns optimistic after World Cup let down

Perth Glory captain Jacob Burns is remaining optimistic following his exclusion from the Australian World Cup squad.

The 32-year old midfielder was left out of Pim Verbeek's preliminary squad of 30 for the tournament in South Africa next month but was quick to wish the team well even though he will not be a part of it.

"I would've loved to gone to South Africa but unfortunately it wasn't to be," said Burns.

"I'd like to thank Pim for all his support and hope Australia has a great tournament."

Glory chief executive Paul Kelly said it was hard news to take for Burns as well as teammates Mile Sterjovski and Chris Coyne, who also missed out, but praised the trio for their commitment to the national team's cause.

"It's gut wrenching for the players but it's a credit to them for doing everything possible to represent their country," said Kelly.

"Their commitment to Australia and the Qantas Socceroos has been first class."
