Pearce proud of his England U21s

Stuart Pearce was visibly proud of his England U21 players after they defeated Norway 2-0 in their final European Championship tune-up match today.

The Young Lions produced a solid performance at Southampton's St Mary's Stadium and the former Nottingham Forest, Newcastle United, West Ham United and Manchester City defender admitted it was nice to get a positive result after the seniors failed to defeat Switzerland on Saturday.

"I think there is pride at senior level personally," he said.

"We're probably three-quarters of the way though a qualification campaign at senior level. We're top of the group.

"From the outset of any tournament, you try to win the group and go on to the finals. If we win the remaining games, we win the group. What more can you do?"

And Pearce said there may possibly be changes for the team's Euro group opener against Spain next weekend.

"I'll let this game settle, have a look at it over the next couple of days and then, when we're together, I'll have at look at how the players come out of this game and what I see on the training pitch between now and Sunday and with the mind's eye of the opposition that we're playing as well," he added.

"There are a lot of players that want to come in and if we want to get over the finish line in two or three weeks' time, all 23 have got to contribute to that cause, and that's tournament football."
