Pearce insists no rift with Arsenal boss Wenger

England U21 boss Stuart Pearce says there's no lingering rift with Arsene Wenger over the selection of Arsenal star Theo Walcott for the summer's European Championships.

Wenger blames Walcott's summer commitments for his injury problems this season, but Pearce revealed: "He put his viewpoint across and I put my viewpoint across. Three days later I bumped into him at the Emirates and it's finished.

"There is no long-term dislike, certainly from my point of view, because I know he's been very supportive to me. I've got Kieran Gibbs and Jack Wilshere here from Arsenal.

"This time it was important that I rang him first because we're talking about a player [Walcott] who hadn't actually played this season yet, so it was important I asked about Theo's fitness.

"If he hadn't have been involved on Sunday with Arsenal I wouldn't have picked him. But it would have been folly for me not to bring him in. I rang Arsene first thing Monday and he was all for it. He thought it was a fantastic idea because he needs games.

"I think club managers do realise that I look after their players. If a player isn't right or isn't fit, they've never been wheeled out on the pitch."
