Parma striker Pandev can see North Macedonia pulling off Italy upset

Parma striker Goran Pandev insists North Macedonia are capable of upsetting Italy in their World Cup playoff.

Pandev, formerly of Genoa, retired from international football after the Euros last summer. He sees an advantage for his nation with injury clouds hanging over Italy's Juventus defensive pair Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci.

"They've been playing together for many years, they know each other well and it will be a big advantage for us to face Italy without them. However, like Alessandro Bastoni, he has a great career ahead," Pandev told La Gazzetta dello Sport newspaper.

However, Pandev is upset seeing Udinese striker Ilija Nestorovski left out of North Macedonia's squad.

“I am sorry for him, I know how much he wanted it," Pandev said.

“Ilija has given so much to North Macedonia, he could have joined the group. More respect is needed. What would have changed in having one or two extra players? He has the experience and knows Italian defenders well."
