Owen, another who left Liverpool for the Spanish capital, advised Bale to go despite not enjoying his time there himself.
"I was the same age child at the time, where I didn't want to leave. I think he's in the same position as me really," said Owen.
"I obviously decided to leave. The temptation of that kit, that stadium, that badge, that history. Everything just felt like it was what I wanted to do.
"I'm sure it will break his heart leaving Tottenham as it did with me, leaving Liverpool. But it's a once in a lifetime opportunity and if I were to advise him, I'd say he's got to try it."
