Olivier Giroud: God wanted me to join AC Milan

Olivier Giroud is delighted he signed for AC Milan.

Giroud credits God for leading him to joining Milan over Champions League semifinal opponents Inter.

He said today: "San Siro is a special place, especially when it comes to the derby. Then there's the prestige of the Champions League and the fact that there will certainly be a Milanese player in the final. I scored three goals in Serie A in three games against Inter and I also made one or two assists, so the stats are good.

"But I also remember the defeat in the Super Cup, they clearly dominated. It stayed in my head, so we'll have to play our best.

"Signing with Milan was an opportunity to face a new challenge. In the end, I didn't play much at Chelsea. I could have left earlier and signed for Inter in the 2020 winter transfer market, instead God wanted that I chose Milan. I am very happy.

"If they had told me that in the first year we would have won the Scudetto after 10 years and that in the second year we would have returned to the Champions League semi-finals after 16 years, it would have seemed unrealistic to me.

"I followed Milan when I was a teenager, at the end of the 90s. One player in particular who made me love this team is Andriy Shevchenko. I tried to imitate him in training, even in the way he ran and in his elegance. He was one of the greatest strikers, very complete; he could score with his right foot, left foot and header, and he was also fast."
