No third time lucky for Souness

Graeme Souness is adamant he will not be applying for the Scotland job for a third time after two previous failed attempts. The former Newcastle and Blackburn boss is currently happy with his rapport with the Scottish nation and is against disrupting that harmony by replacing George Burley if he were offered the job.

"Is there anything that could lure me back to football? I don't want to work with players day to day. Maybe an international job but it's not Scotland at this time," he told the Daily Record.

"The reason for that is I enjoyed such a good time in Scotland. Going to dinners such as the Hall of Fame is fantastic and I'm always warmly received.

"I would hate to destroy that by becoming the Scotland manager and being an absolute disaster at it.

"It's not a poisoned chalice because Walter Smith made a good job of it as did Alex McLeish.

"The Scotland job is not something I see for myself right now. I applied a couple of times, got turned down a couple of times, so there won't be a third.

"I am happy at the moment. I genuinely believe my best years are in front of me and I've had the most wonderful life. In football I've fulfilled everything I wanted to.

"Of course, I'd liked to have won the Premiership a couple of times as manager and a few European Cups as well. However, I did win that three times as a player so I have been blessed.

"When I was a player and then a manager, because I was so passionate about football, I never saw it as hard work.

"But now I have been out of it for four years, after being sacked by Newcastle, I've realised it is hard, hard work. It actually took me two years to get that."

Souness does not believe he will ever work in club management again, but has hinted he would consider running a club and is not ruling out moving for Rangers.

"I have not made any attempt to buy Rangers but who knows what the future holds," he continued.

"I can tell you one thing, I will never again be a manager of a football club. But an owner? I wouldn't rule that out."
