Newcastle United have failed with a bid for Bordeaux striker Diego Rolan.

The Sunday Express says the Toon have had an £11m bid for Rolan turned down.

But head coach Steve McClaren, who has already been backed in the transfer market by owner Mike Ashley to the tune of almost £40m, is still hoping to sign the Uruguay star, 22.

An increased offer could prove successful, with the French club committed to finding a replacement.
