Newcastle United are believed to be reconsidering a move for Aston Villa's Ron Vlaar, instead turning their attention to Schalke 04's Joel Matip.
Vlaar's contract at Villa Park expires on July 1 and the Chronicle is reporting the Dutch international is also attracting interest from the likes of Besiktas and Manchester United.
However, it is understood Newcastle's preference now is to try and lure the younger Matip, who is reportedly keen on a move to the English Premier League, to St James' Park.
Earlier this week, Vlaar said he was unsure what his future held.
"Even if I knew, I would not be able to tell you," Vlaar said. "But, the truth is that there is nothing going on right now.
"No idea about renewing with Aston Villa, but the truth is that nothing is confirmed."
