Wigan Athletic's Shaun Maloney feels today's 2-1 home win over Newcastle United can be the catalyst to avoiding relegation this season.
The Latics produced a vital victory thanks to Arouna Kone's late winner after Jean Beausejour and Magpies defender Davide Santon had earlier traded goals.
The win has Wigan still sitting 18th on the table, three points behind Aston Villa who are in safety, but Maloney suggests it could be the performance that lifts Roberto Martinez's men pout of the mire come seasons end.
"It was just a huge effort from us to try and go and get the winner and we were a bit unfortunate in the end, but that's a massive three points for us," the man of the match told Sky Sports.
"We hope so (that it kickstarts our escape). It's disappointing that we're in this position again, but we found ourselves in it and it's up to us to get ourselves out of it."
