Newcastle United have launched a bid for Roma captain Lorenzo Pellegrini.

Il Corriere dello Sport says an offer of £50m was tabled in recent days - though turned down by the Giallorossi.

The 25-year-old has four years left to run on his deal with the Serie A club.

The free-scoring midfielder struck 14 times in 41 matches for Roma last term and made eight assists, leading the club to victory in the Europa League.

He is due to face England in Wolverhampton on Saturday night in the Nations League A division Group 3 game.
