Newcastle's Diame credits Senegal retirement for performances

Mohamed Diame believes his decision to retire from international football was very much beneficial for him on a club level.

The Senegalese bright performances in the second part of the 2017/18 season helped Newcastle United finish 10th in the league.

The international break will stop the Premier League now until September 15, but the midfielder knows he can use it to fully refresh unlike many other players.

"The break has come at a very good time for us," Diame said.

"We've had three games this week, three games where we were running a lot, so it's a good time to recover and have a little bit of a rest to befresh for Arsenal.

"Retiring from international football has definitely helped me. I have time to rest.

"Some people have to travel a lot; maybe play a full international game and it's not going to be easy for them. But I will have a rest and come back fresh for Arsenal."
