The People says Ashley is a big fan of the straight-talking Welshman, who has turned around Crystal Palace's fortunes this season.
And Toon owner Ashley is poised to change managers this summer, with Alan Pardew failing to deliver results and facing unrest in the dressing room and stands.
Ashley would have to pay for Pulis - with compensation around a hefty £3million.
