Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer was delighted to see Michael Owen and Alan Smith leading the line for England this week against Germany.
He told the Evening Chronicle: "It's great for Michael - he's had a lot of injuries and he needs minutes and games under his belts.
"He needs a run of games now, and when he gets that I've no doubt that the goals will come."
On Smith, Shearer added: "It's great for the players themselves and great for Newcastle to have that recognition at England level.
"That's the first time England have had two Newcastle forwards since Les and myself played together.
"It's great for Alan Smith as he's not played centre forward this season - he's only played midfield - and having the two playing up front for England can only be good for Newcastle United.
"He's played up front for the majority of his career, but he's one of those players who seems to play well whatever position he's asked to play in."
