Newcastle Jets midfielder Jobe Wheelhouse is set to undergo knee surgery in a bid to save his season.
The 25-year old hard-tackling middleman has managed just three of eight games so far this season because of knee soreness and will have an arthroscope next week so he can recover and then be fit again for the remainder of the term.
"The plan was that after the rest I've given it, to give it a workout yesterday, today and tomorrow," Wheelhouse told the Newcastle Herald.
"It wasn't too bad during yesterday's session but today it's probably back to where it was. So it's back to the drawing board and I'll see [Dr] Tim Musgrove on Tuesday and hopefully I can get some surgery next week.
"We weren't sure if it would need surgery but everything we've tried hasn't worked, so that could be the only option.
"I need to get it done, because I've been waiting too long as it is. Time's ticking away."
