Newcastle Jets close to bringing in European striker

Newcastle Jets will know on Monday if they will have a guest European player to add to their squad for a 10-match period.

Jets executive chairman Ken Edwards confirmed that he had spoken to the unnamed player's management and would have an answer early next week.

"It will work out one way or the other by Monday," Edwards told the Newcastle Herald.

"If we were able to secure a guest player in the next week, it's most likely their first game would be our next home game on the 27th and the 10 games from that point it would take them through to the middle of December. Of those 10 games, seven would be at home so there's some other benefits there for us in addition to the pure playing ability of the player.

"We can get them involved so that Newcastle fans get maximum exposure to the player who has played internationally."

Under the new ownership of racing and mining identity Nathan Tinkler, the Jets can afford to bring an overseas marquee player and will need one after captain Michael Bridges had an arthroscope on his knee and will be out for six weeks.
