Newcastle boss Pardew: Richardson has great chance of making it

Newcastle United boss Alan Pardew reckons they've uncovered something special in midfielder Michael Richardson.

Just a year ago, Richardson was working as an electrician and playing for Walker Central.

But after Chris Hughton handed the player a trial last summer, he joined the club in August as a late developer.

Pardew told the Evening Chronicle: "He's only been here 10 months, and he's jumped ahead of a few players.

"Fair play to him, he looks a really good prospect. But, of course, he shouldn't be on the bench for a club this size at this time. Hopefully, his time is in the next couple of years.

"We really like him.

"He's a great lad and we're hoping to see much more from him in the future. It's a great opportunity."

Richardson's progress has also not gone unnoticed by Peter Beardsley in the reserve team, with the former Newcastle, England and Liverpool legend impressed greatly by the 18-year-old.

Beardsley said: "I've got a soft spot for Michael. I think his attitude is sensational.

"It's all right having the attitude, but you have to have the ability, and Michael has it."
