Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce is open to bringing back striker Andy Carroll to St James' Park on a free transfer.

The Evening Chronicle says Bruce is an admirer of the released West Ham centre-forward but wants him to prove his fitness.

The newly appointed head coach has already made checks on Carroll's fitness status with the big striker still recovering from an ankle operation.

Carroll has not made a decision on his future yet but has had offers from abroad.

However, the boyhood Toon fan and former season ticket holder would be interested in a chance to finish his career at home.
