Newcastle, Atalanta in contact with Hertha Berlin defender Torunarigha

Newcastle United are eyeing Hertha Berlin defender Jordan Torunarigha.

Torunarigha is expected to leave Hertha before the market shuts, reports Sport1 via Fussball Transfers, with Newcastle and Atalanta keen.

Both clubs are in contact with Torunarigha's management team.

The defender's deal runs to 2023 and Hertha are prepared to sell the 24 year-old this summer. Torunarigha has been with Hertha his entire career, first joining the club as a junior 15 years ago. The Chemnitz-born stopper was part of Germany's Olympics squad at this summer's Tokyo Games. He is also a Germany U21 international.

Torunarigha has played a total of 75 senior games for his formative club.

Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini is demanding a new centre-half signing after losing Cristian Romero to Tottenham earlier this month. Newcastle, meanwhile, have been following Torunarigha for the past 18 months. Unlike Newcastle, Atalanta can offer Torunarigha Champions League football this season.
