New York Red Bulls' Rodgers named MLS Player of the Week for Week 5

New York Red Bulls striker Luke Rodgers was named the Week 5 MLS Player of the Week.

The former Notts County forward was playing his fourth game for his new club when he scored a match-winning double whilst providing an assist in the 3-0 home win over San Jose Earthquakes.

Rodgers opened up the scoring for the Red Bulls in just the second minute when he directed a Dane Richards attempt into the back of his net with an opportunistic header before finishing some good work from Thierry Henry in the 15th minute.

The 29-year old then turned provider for Henry, playing a pinpoint floating ball to the backpost where the Frenchman was able to score with a diving header to wrap up proceedings at a soaking wet Red Bull Arena.

Rodgers joins four other players who scored braces to be nominated for the Player of the Week prize.
